Board M/V MONHEGAN, a beautifully restored wooden lobster boat, and cruise through Portland's Harbor, passing historic wharves from just after the Revolutionary War. Notice the stone fortresses that once protected one of the busiest harbors in early America.
View the smallest lighthouse on the cruise, near Bug Light, and keep an eye out for kite flyers and even a giant purple octopus floating in the breeze. Nearby, see the statue of a Liberty Ship bow, a reminder of Portland's WWII shipbuilding history.
Get close to Spring Point Light and Fort Preble, built as part of Portland’s harbor defenses. Early on, ships that misjudged the lighthouse risked running aground on the shallow ledge nearby.
Enjoy the stunning fall foliage along Cape Elizabeth, home to some of Casco Bay’s most beautiful seaside homes.
See Portland Head Light, Maine’s oldest lighthouse, from the water. Built beginning in 1791 and commissioned by George Washington, it’s been guiding ships for over two centuries, surviving hurricanes and wars.
Observe Ram Island Light, perched on a rocky ledge and appearing to float at high tide. Unlike Portland Head Light, it’s weathered and more remote, accessible only by a ladder after a short climb on the outside.
Enjoy views of Cushing Island’s cliffs and the quaint cottages of Peaks Island, once home to amusement parks and now a quiet neighborhood with a small year-round population. Most residents now arrive by ferry or water taxi.
Visit Fort Scammel on House Island, active since 1808 and the only Portland fort to have fought in battle during the War of 1812. Tours are available on select trips—please inquire for details.
See Fort Gorges, a striking stone fortress built to defend Portland Harbor. Though never used in battle, it served as a WWII storage site and played a strategic role during conflicts, protecting the region from attack.
